by Dr Sam Girgis on October 27, 2011

We have recently discussed the new anticoagulants for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation.  MedPage Today has recently posted this excellent video review of these new anticoagulants.  The key principles are as follows:

- Atrial fibrillation is a common cause of stroke and there are effective therapies that can prevent this sequelae

- The new therapies for atrial fibrillation, which include dabigatran, rivaroxaban, and apixaban are as good or even better than the traditional warfarin therapy at stroke prevention

- The new anticoagulants have a wide therapeutic range and do not require monitoring of the INR for a narrow goal therapeutic range
